The Video Platform Grants The Community Control to Reduce AI-Generated Content in Timelines

Users will soon have a fresh option that enables them to reduce the amount of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the platform disclosed that it presently contains more than 1 bn content made with AI.

Trial and Implementation

The new functionality is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a widespread rollout. This shift aligns with a surge in AI content, driven by emerging content generation software.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that approximately one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding channels on a competing service exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this content is classified as low-quality AI content, a term for substandard, bulk-generated content that is often nonsensical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that many people appreciate content created using AI tools, including computer-generated images to educational videos, and we aim to provide users the ability to see more or less of that, according to their own choices,” stated a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

TikTok shared that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its app identified as made with AI. In total, more than 100 m videos are submitted to the platform every day, making AI-generated material a relatively small percentage of its overall inventory.

User Control Features

Members will be able to limit or boost the amount of artificial media they watch by using the topic control option in the application and picking “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that can already be adjusted under the filter include politics, clothing, cosmetics, and dance.

AI Disclosure Rules

TikTok’s policies oblige users to identify convincing artificially created content, and it forbids malicious fake videos of public figures or crisis events. Any realistic AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be removed under its community policies.

In addition, the service will now attach an artificially created tag to content produced via its built-in AI features, or flagged by an collaborative effort for spotting artificial media. This step is intended to stop users from seeking to circumvent the labeling process.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is furthermore launching a two million dollar awareness program for experts and groups to create educational content about using AI responsibly. This program will assist educational bodies focused on training coding and technology.

Platform Protection

The video-sharing app has supported its moderation strategy, amid debate over plans to lay off a large number of content moderators in the UK. The company is expected to cut 439 jobs in its content moderation division in its British office, with worker representatives and online safety experts voicing alarm that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A trust and safety lead stated that people-led review would continue to be important, but automated tools can safeguard staff by filtering out the most graphic content ahead of it is viewed by humans. The company stated a notable drop in disturbing and violent content reviewed by content reviewers over the previous year due to the use of its automated systems.

We believe it is crucial to integrate people and machines to ensure user safety,” she said. “We’ll have humans as part of that process, but we further consider it’s very important to minimize viewing of unsafe media as quickly as possible, which is why a lot of the machine support is making a difference operate efficiently.”
