At least 13 individuals perish and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
